John J Zullo
John Zullo is the Artistic Director of Zullo/RawMovement since 2010 and is a choreographer, teacher, producer, curator and performer originally from the Bronx, NY. He graduated from American University in 1996 with a BA in Anthropology and 1999 with an MA in Dance. He performed with Regina Nejman, Erick Montes and Rebudal Dance where he served as rehearsal and associate director until 2008. He has taught, lectured and created works at various schools, colleges, and universities including Gibney Dance Center, College of Charleston, NYU, Emory, Western Michigan State, American University, Adelphi University, Greenwich Academy and many others nationally and internationally. Zullo has been awarded creation residencies at LaMaMa, FLICFest, The Field, Duo Multicultural Arts Center, and Cuny Dance Initiative. Zullo has facilitated 4 RawMovement summer workshops in NYC and produced the first RawMovementFestival in 2017. He has been invited onto the curatorial panel for INSITU Festival 2018 and Founded the Queerly Contemporary Festival for LGBTQ+ Artists in 2018. His latest full evening work premiered at City College Center for the Arts in February 2019.
Zullo was awarded a Mertz Gilmore Late stage stipend to recreate "The Architecture of Proximity" in 2019/20.
Zullo/RawMovement creates performance experiences using movement, architecture, sound, light and new media to create whole environments exploring concepts drawn from the cultural landscape and shares these works to elicit an emotional response to a movement-based experience in traditional and non-traditional settings. Using both set choreography and structured improvisation performance works are created and shared with as diverse an audience as possible.
Zullo/RawMovement was commissioned and presented in the first INSITU Site-Specific Festival in July of 2017, at BAM"s Everybooty Festival and was a recipient of a CUNY Dance Initiative residency for the creation and presentation of new work in April 2017 at City College and presented at the 92nd Street Y, BAM, The Irondale Center, Dixon Place, Theater for the New City, LaMaMa NYC and Spoleto, Italy, RawMovement has presented 3 NY seasons, produced the RMFestival2017, 4 annual Summer Workshops at Gibney Dance Center.
